Here is a great guest mix by Paul Murphy compiled by very old R and B from the fifties.

Paul Murphy is among an ultra-rare group of eclectic UK DJ’s, first WIRE Magazine DJ of the Year in 1985 whose remarkable path of music history continues to this day. He currently DJ’s internationally he's used to run Afro Art label & a record store. (One of his employees was a young up-and-coming DJ named Gilles Peterson). Surely, the years of spinning and collecting music must have facilitated a library of musical ideas and directions for a debut album.

Here is a little bit of info by himself on this mix. “There used to be a really great radio programme on BBC Radio london back in the day, "Honky Tonk" hosted by renowned author, record producer and music expert Charlie Gillett. I learned more about music from that programme than any before or since. He used to play a huge amount of rhythm and blues, rock and roll and modern (at that time) funk and soul. I first heard "Big Chief" by Professor Longhair and The JB's "Hot Pants Road" through him. Many years went by and i got into other things and radio london became radio bigot. I went to japan with Gaz "Rockin Blues" Mayall in 1986 where we both were dj'ing , me jazz, latin etc, him playing 1950's black rhythm and blues. He blew my mind completely with his tunes. When i came back i started to buy 'em and play 'em in the clubs i was dj'ing at, the "Sol y Sombra" in Charlotte Street, London and also playing them at a west indian "blues" in euston road where the old dudes taught me a hell of a lot about the roots of reggae.."its Arrl from Roscoe Gordon and Bill Doggett marn!"... But thats another story..

A little bit about the music. Etta James (who is currently being portrayed by pop singer beyonce in the film "Cadillac Records" which i wouldn’t advise you to waste your money on. Its about the same quality as a "tv movie of the week") with an early hit.

Barbie Gaye performs the original of Millie Smalls "My Boy Lollipop" now even better known through a flash mob ad for t mobile. Risque lyrics from Fluffy Hunter but still playable in front of your mum.

An original version of Alligator from Bobby Charles , two Johnny g Watson tracks just 'cos i like 'em the original of James Brown funk fave "think" and finishing off with a real riot.

Glad to see Mr. Keb Darge playing these sounds.. Rock on Keb.”

Grab all these great vibes still sounding fresh these days to “get in the move... real groovy move.”
